We built the Larch for two people who want to do very little. Light the stove, open the top window, and listen to the wood.

A living room under a steep timber roof, with rattan chairs, a sofa and a stair up to a loft.

The bed sits up under the roof, so the morning comes in through the tall front window. Downstairs there’s a small kitchen, a table for two and a deck that looks into the trees. It’s a twelve-minute walk to the swimming spot, and nobody will ask you to be anywhere.

Deep, cold and clear, with a flat rock for your towel. We swim here from May, and the brave ones start in April.

The bread comes out at eight and is usually gone by ten. Get the rye, and don’t skip whatever’s still warm.
